CHARACTER NAME: Rapunzel
FANDOM: Film: Tangled
CHRONOLOGY: After when Rapunzel and Flynn see the lanterns but before sailing the boat back to shore.
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: Rapunzel
ALTER EGO: Nope
BACKGROUND:
Rapunzel is the long-lost princess of a stereotypical fairy-tale kingdom. There are horses that are as smart as people, ruffians with hearts of gold, noble kings, evil witches and pet chameleons. Also a lot of singing and the occasional spontaneous dance number. Well, there's only one of those. Rapunzel is the daughter of the beloved royal couple. Her mother was very sick while she was pregnant, and so the people set out and found a magical golden flower that could heal her. After she was healed, Rapunzel was born.
Unfortunately, the flower had been the 'property' of a witch named Dame Gothel (which is basically german for lady godmother...), and she had been using the magic of the flower to keep herself young. She snuck into the palace, intent on finding out if the flowers magic existed in the child, and then tried to cut off a piece of her hair to take with her when she found it did. Unfortunately, cutting off Rapunzel's hair removed the magic from it, so Gothel wound up kidnapping the baby.
Gothel smuggled Rapunzel away to a tower hidden inside a secret canyon in the mountains, and inside she raised the baby as her daughter, teaching her that the outside world was a place of fear full of people that would want to steal her magic and cut off her hair. Rapunzel was raised away from the world entirely, except for the view out of her windows and her tiny pet Chameleon, Pascal.
Back in the kingdom, her devastated parents began releasing swarms of flying lanterns every year in her birthday, hoping the lights would lead her home.
Rapunzel grew up mostly the way Gothel wanted her to, a happy, pleasant child content (for the most part) to stay inside the tower where it was safe. The one exception to this was that every year on her birthday she would sneak to the window and watch the glowing lanterns flying up through the sky. She didn't know what they were, but she felt drawn to them. They fascinated her.
The day before her eighteenth birthday, she decided to ask her mother to take her to go see the lanterns.
Gothel rejected this immediately, reinforcing all the fears that she had instilled in Rapunzel before leaving to go gather dinner. Rapunzel would never, ever survive in the real world, after all. She couldn't take care of herself. And a few other carefully chosen insults to undermine the girls self-esteem.
Rapunzel, for the most part, had accepted this answer...until a thief named Flynn Rider snuck into the tower while on the run from the Kingdom for stealing the lost princess's crown.
Rapunzel knocked him out with a frying pan and stuffed him in a closet.
When Gothel returned, Rapunzel tried to explain to her mother 'Look, I can take care of myself!' but she couldn't get it out, and Gothel screamed that she would never, ever let her out of the tower. So Rapunzel lied, and said that what she really wanted for her birthday was some paint made of shells that were three days from the tower. Gothel, reluctantly, agreed to go get them.
And Rapunzel struck a deal with Flynn. She would tell him where she had hidden the satchel with the crown (she didn't know what it was) if he took her to see the flying lanterns. He agreed. What choice did he have?
This set off a fairly standard adventure. Rapunzel dealt with her fears/excitement with being outside, Flynn started to realize there was more to life than money. They met some ruffians with hearts of gold who sang songs, ran away from Kingdom Guards, and managed to befriend an extremely intelligent horse named Maximus who was hunting Flynn. She learned Flynn's real name, he learned the secret of her hair, and he took her into the kingdom to see the Lanterns. She was overwhelmed by the city, but loved every second of it despite her fear. And there was a connection forming there, and Rapunzel honestly thought Flynn might like her. ('Like her' like her, even!)
Gothel, of course, realized something was wrong and began chasing after them, using soem of Flynn's former crime buddies to assist her, and planting the idea in Rapunzel's head that Flynn didn't care about her at all, and he would disappear when she gave him back the crown.
Eventually they got a boat and sailed out to the middle of the lake, and Rapunzel got to see her flying lanterns up close. And then, as they sailed back to shore, Rapunzel got sucked into the City.
PERSONALITY:
Rapunzel is a dreamer. She dreams of the outside world, imagines what it would be like, making assumptions about things based on what she already knows. What does grass feel like? Or water running over her feet in a stream? Or running through the forest? She's made up all these sensations in her head, created them piece by piece from guesswork and hope and imagination.
Rapunzel is also kind of a spaz. Not in a bad way, but having spent her entire life locked inside the top of a not-very-large tower, she's very used to doing whatever she wants, when she once, within a specific set of confined circumstances. If she wants to paint on the ceiling, she will. If she wants to play hide and seek with Pascal the Chameleon for an entire morning, no matter how bad at it he is, she will. She has an interest in nearly everything...she might bake a cake, then knit a sweater, then do a bunch of exercises, then read an entire book.
In the more 'basic' sense, Rapunzel is bright and clever, thinks quickly on her feet and can adapt to most situations surprisingly well (although it can take her a little bit of time.) She's fast to trust, but paranoid of initial meetings...once someone proves they are trustworthy, even just once or in a small way, she trusts them. Although not necessarily completely.
She's also obviously naive about certain things, while being oddly worldly about others. She knows nothing about boys, and yet knows how to calm down a rampaging horse. She doesn't know what the flying lanterns are, but knows how to organize people into a dance. It's mostly for 'comedic' reasons, given the setting of the movie, but it's a fun concept to play off of.
If she promises something, she always follows through on it. Even if it's something bad for her (such as promising to stay with Dame Gothel if the woman lets her save Flynn's life, even if she knows the woman will treat her horribly now.) She's also very loving, in a child-like sort of way. Even knowing that Dame Gothel has been using her, that she just tried to kill Eugene, Rapunzel still reached for her when she fell out of the tower. She still wanted to save her.
She loves to sing, and does so all the time, more so even than someone might expect in a singing-based fairy tale kingdom. Music is just a part of who she is, and she's often humming or singing to herself.
Rapunzel does not wear shoes. Pretty much ever. And she doesn't mind getting her feet dirty.
POWER:
Healing Magic: Rapunzel is a healer. This power is located in her hair, and in her tears (she doesn't know this second bit) and is activated when she sings a song Dame Gothel taught her. It can heal most injuries, and doesn't tire her out. Her hair has to be wrapped around the injury to work. Her tears are less localized, and just need to touch a person. If her hair is cut, it loses this ability.
Exceedingly Strong Hair: Rapunzel's hair is extremely thick and extremely strong. She can support the weight of a full grown person with it, and yet cause no strain to her head. She can manipulate like a puppet-master and grab something or wrap around a branch to be used as a swing or a rope. It's around seventy feet long
It also glows when she sings.
Non-canon addition: For the sake of sanity and fun, if Rapunzel's hair is cut off she will lose her powers for two weeks, and then it will begin rapidly growing back (A foot every two hours or so), and her magic will return once it is ten feet long again. It will continue to grow until it is back at its usual length.

COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
[When the screen clicks on it is covered by a small, pale thumb, with only bits of the Porter room visible around the edges of the digit. The bits appear to be moving though as the phone is swung about.]
That voice said people will talk to me through this, Pascal. Do you think Eugene will? Or maybe Mother? Although she's already mad at me and getting sent somewhere even further from home is just going to make more angry...
[After a few seconds the phone is placed on a surface and the thumb disappears, only to be replaced by a featureless wall. For ten seconds there is nothing.]
...Nothing's happening. Do you think...
[A few seconds later the screen whirls as the phone is turned around, revealing the long haired Rapunzel with a tiny green chameleon on her shoulder. Rapunzel is bent over slightly, her hair tumbling down off the side of her head in waves, and the phone must be propped up on a desk. Girl and Chameleon both look very expectant, eager even, their eyes wide and hopeful, faces maybe two feet from the phone. And nothing happens, of course. Eventually Rapunzel frowns.]
Maybe I'm supposed to say something?
[This is whispered in an aside to the Chameleon, who just shrugs at her, and she turns back to the screen and holds up a hand, giving a little wave of her fingers.]
Hello? I'm Rapunzel. I just woke up here, but I don't know how. Or why. The voice in the ceiling was not very helpful. Uhm. Eugene, if you can hear this I didn't mean to leave the boat, and Mother if you can hear this...I don't know...I'm sorry? [And then in an aside to the chameleon.] Do you think that's enough?
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
Rapunzel sat on the steps outside of the porter building, her hair piled up around her like a little fort, blocking her from view all the way up to her neck. She was watching the people go by, the walkers and the cars and the animals. Whenever someone paused to look at her (and she must have been a sight, she imagined) she would offer a friendly little wave and then they moved on.
She hadn't quite worked up the courage to get any farther from where she had arrived than this. It wasn't that she wasn't curious...between the buildings and the people adn the cars and everything she was almost uncontrollably curious. But there was a sense of safety in the place she had arrived...four walls, a ceiling, an enclosed environment...it reminded her of the tower, just a little. And there was security in that, no matter how much she had wanted to escape her home.
Besides, if Eugene (or Mother) was going to come and find her, it made the most sense that he (or she) would find her here. So she figured the best idea was to wait. And it wasn't as though sitting here was boring. A bit unsettling, and nerve wracking, and she'd already run back inside twice since she'd come out, but not in any way boring.
She watched a bus pass, a colorful sign for something called a 'record' painted across the side, and then turned to look at Pascal, who was sitting on her shoulder. "You think we should go out there now?"
The little chameleon chittered at her.
"No, I know. It makes sense to wait here. But there's...there's just so much to see."
He chittered some more and then made little tiny footprint motions with his hands.
"Well...I guess it wouldn't hurt to just go a little ways. As long...as long as the building is still in sight. That makes sense, right?"
He nodded agreeably.
"Okay. ...okay." She didn't move. "Okay. I can do this. I can." She sucked in a breath, closed her eyes, and then hauled herself to her feet, gathering up her hair. "Here we go."
FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
Rapunzel has a tiny pet chameleon named Pascal who typically rides around on her shoulder or hides in her hair or sits ontop of her head. He can change colors like any other chameleon, and is exceedingly expressive, using hand gestures and head gestures to convey little messages. He is intelligent enough to understand human concepts and play games, but cannot speak. He does chitter at her when she asks questions, and while Rapunzel appears to understand what he's 'saying', it's hard to tell whether he's actually talking to her, or she's just using him to voice her own mental concerns.
